The brain 's complexity is beyond our comprehension. There are receptors in the brain for example in drug addicts and alcoholics that crave the chemical difference that takes place when they use their drug of choice. What is interesting is that there are receptors that crave the chemical reaction that takes place when we fall prey to one of our character defects as well. An example is an anger. When one tries to change this particular character defect by acting in healthier ways, that receptor gets hungry for the stimulus it gets when one gets angry, when this person changes this behavior it deprives the receptor this stimulus and it gets really hungry so to speak. This is why it is so easy to slip back into old behaviors. These things are so ingrained to these receptors, they are many times stronger than the person. It is hard to change negative behaviors, but we must keep trying.
Take anger for example. Anger comes in many different forms. Some people view anger as perhaps a person who is full of rage. People think anger is someone who is cursing, throwing things, hitting things or other people. These are examples of the anger of course, but anger also can be just holding things inside yourself and not talking about them. This is also a form of anger that many people don't realize or think about. Anger can take on the form of resentments which can manifest itself into a low level of constant agitation and frustration. This in return builds up in a person until they lash out, or it stays there festering leading to depression. Anger and depression go hand in hand, it is hard to say which comes first. These things result in elevated blood pressure, headaches, body aches, high cholesterol, and leads some people to drink or drug use. Learn to talk about issues that make you angry, if we do this, we will be in better general health. --Keith
