The other evening as I went for a run by the river here in New Mexico, I saw two kids about twelve years old throwing rocks at the ducks. When they saw me coming they immediately straightened up in a stiff posture and said ”Hi Sir, have a good run.” They assumed I would be like the typical adult and jump on them. I have always said I would never be the adult like the ones when I was growing up, and I am not.
Meanwhile I remember being about their age and I was out shooting my B.B. gun when I saw a robin about 50 ft away. I took a pot shot and nailed it right in the stomach. It was flopping around feathers flying, I didn’t kill it, it wasn’t a clean shot. I was shocked I had not thought ahead enough to think about how I would feel if I actually hit it. Anyway I felt horrible. It was suffering so my friend shot it again to put it out of his misery. I was devastated by the whole incident. Now back to the kids I came across when running. I told them this story and indeed the youngsters said they had not actually thought about how they would feel if they hit the duck. So I told them if they wanted to keep throwing rocks at the ducks, go ahead, but be prepared to feel bad if you hit it. I assumed they stopped who knows. Keith
