I met Roscoe on a brilliant, sun-drenched day at the lake while taking a much-needed day off to enjoy water and sunshine. Armed with an air mattress under one arm, and my beach bag hanging on the other, I walked to the water, pushed off from the shore, and paddled until the people sunning themselves on the dock faded into little patches of color. I kept my eyes straight ahead, then turned over on my back and fell into an amniotic sleep. I slept until something crashed into me. Evidently, a boat had passed close by, and the turbulence of the wake combined with another solitude-seeking soul on an air mattress jolted me out of my sleep. “Oops, I’m sorry miss.” Squinting and half-opening my left eye toward the voice that interrupted my bliss, “No problem.” “Mam your sure are way out here.” “Yes, I guess I am huh?” “Hello my name’s Roscoe.” I remained quiet thinking about if I wanted to share my name with him. “And your name?” “Kaley,” I answered. “I am out here because I want the quiet time.” “Yeah, that’s why I’m out here, too. Interesting how we ended up out here together, don’t you think?” “I suppose.” “You’re a beautiful lady,” he said as he held onto my air mattress to keep us from floating apart. I turned to him to tell him I’d rather not chitchat, but as our eyes met, I couldn’t do it. No doubt, I was safe out in the middle of those waters. What was he going to do- rape me on an air mattress? Just being unafraid was just part of my reason for not dismissing him at that moment. There was something in the face of this annoying intruder that kept me from sending him away. “Flattery will get you far with me,” I told him. “Hey, I’d love to go far with you.” I looked at this handsome, but effeminate man before me with every intention of informing him that I wanted to be alone, but as our eyes met again, we both burst out in laughter. And so it began.
