I have been working with addicts, criminals, alcoholics for the last twenty years. One thing they always tell me is that boredom leads them to trouble. They say they don’t have enough to do. Years ago, I totally agreed with what they were saying; now I think perhaps they use this as an excuse to go out and use. In our society, there is always something to do; we can always find something to occupy our time. We may discover that whatever it is we find to do is not the most exciting thing in the world, especially not as fun as getting high, but healthy activities are out there. Hiking, biking, library, reading, there is always something. Many communities offer an array of activities to become involved with, such as cleaning hiking trails, volunteering at a food shelter, neighborhood watch programs etc. There is always something to get yourself involved in. There is always another choice besides using or drinking if you just find it, but you have to want to. Therefore, my thoughts are stop using boredom as an excuse to go use, find something to do. “Notice every moment.” Keith
