“Baby Cries”
By Kelly Darrow Lying in his crib soaked in urine hour after long hour, a baby cries into the darkness of the night for his mother who ain’t comin’ home. Wanting to feel her caress his head, he aches for her touch. Just once to feel her hands and to be loved. Years pass by quickly. He is a lucky boy to have her. Granny has always been there. Sean is now ten, postman at the door. A letter addressed to little Sean from his mother, she’s busted and lonely wanting to see him. Sacred and soul soaked in booze. She wants to caress and hold her baby boy. Someone to love just for a moment. She’s coming home and he can’t wait. She arrives a week later and loves him for a day. He wakes one rainy morning to find her gone away. He don’t know what he did, but blames himself as he always has. Mother has gone once again. Granny says, “Baby it’s not your fault.”
