In High School, I worked at a pizza joint. In 12th grade, back in 1986, I still remember this guy coming into the restaurant. He sat at a table and as I was bussing other tables, somehow we struck up a conversation. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, that I was seventeen at would graduate in a month. “What are you going to do?” He asked. I told him my parents wanted me to go to this specific college. He asked if I always do what my parents want, and then he said, “You can choose for yourself you know.” This was the first time that anyone ever told me I could do that. At the time, it was weird, I thought, who is this guy? My parents never thought out of the box, they were scared of life and doing anything new or different was not even a question, I will never forget this guy, he gave me permission to think for myself. Nobody had ever done that before. I feel we should urge our children to always think for themselves, because there won’t always be someone there to think for them. “Notice every moment.” Keith

Mother was a nut-job, brother a pedophile Life, and I had the good fortune of completing this lovely little triad. My name is Roscoe Rydell, born in 1953. We lived out in the boonies in West Memphis, Arkansas; and to my knowledge, no one even realized mother was pregnant. She refused to get any medical care, and convinced herself that on occasion, hospitals stole newborn babies who proved to be of superior intelligence; and beyond a doubt, any offspring she produced would fit that bill. So I was born at home under the watchful eye of my brother and the American flag, which hung from the ceiling of the bedroom. Mother adamant I’d be female, already had a ten-year-old son when I came along, so she prepared to complete our little family with something soft and frilly. My father, being non-existent, I learned very early that even mentioning the word “father” is akin to saying, “goddamn or fuck,” all in one sentence. |
