I have always had vivid dreams throughout my life, and most of the time they are strange, very strange. I get some good ideas to write about from these dreams. I always keep a pad beside my bed and when I wake up from one of these dreams, I write it down and read it the next day. Many time I notice patterns in my dreams and can associate them to what I may be going through at that particular time in my life. I urge everyone to write down your dreams if you can remember them, and document any patterns you see. Notice if it relates to your life at the moment. Use these dreams to get material to write about, it really works well for me. I heard somewhere once that we dream every night , we just might not remember them. Fortunately I always remember mine it seems. Have a good day everyone . Below is Wikipedia definition of dreams as well as a link to a dream dictionary which tells the meaning of your dream. Many times I will look to see a meaning and use it to create information for a story, article, or poem. Try this as it is a good way to get a new piece of writing started. Enjoy.
Keith Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur usually involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not definitively understood, though they have been a topic of scientific speculation, as well as a subject of philosophical and religious interest, throughout recorded history. In my opinion a writer should write material from the heart, which I suppose most fiction writer’s do. What I mean is, I know a few who write with the idea of selling their work only. Of course a few extra dollars is nice, but in my opinion a writer should write for the purpose of expressing him or herself. That's what it is about. Self-expression through writing is essential in making one successful. This is my thoughts anyway. What do you think?. I also feel a writer should write about what makes them happy, whatever they feel passionate about, whether it is a popular subject or not. It is about the expression, not about selling the books. My philosophy is, "I write books and if they sell that's a bonus." I never write with selling in mind. I write to express my feelings and my ideas, my message.
It seems that my best writing as well as others that I have talked to, comes when I/they are going through a hard time in life, such as a breakup or job loss or something to that effect. I believe that, because I know that some of my best stuff comes in a time of such issues. This is unfortunate, but that is the case for me anyway. I was working on my book of poetry over the weekend, and some of the poetry I have chosen for it goes way back in my life. I thought to myself, how good some of the pieces are and as I read through them, I remembered what I was going through at that particular time in my life. The best poems I have written are during stressful times. Not that I want to go through these times again, but some of the poetry is very well written. I use writing to help me through these particular times. It is all interesting to me the relationship between life and writing. Take care of everyone. I remember back in the mid-eighties when I was a teen-ager, I worked at this pizza joint in Texas. One of my co-workers who lived in a nearby town was driving into work for the afternoon shift and on his way he picked up a gentlemen hitchhiker who's semi had broken down. I remember sitting and talking with this guy. He was old, probably thirty (LOL), at my age then, thirty was old. Anyway, he asked me what I wanted to do in my life and I responded by telling him that I wanted to go to college for a business degree. He asked what my father did for a living and I told him that my old man was in retail. The guy responded, "Is that what your dad wants you to do is go to college for a business degree?".I said, "yes". "You don"t have to do everything your parents want you to do." It was the first time anybody ever told me that I didn't have to do what my parent's wished. My dream was to be a musician and a writer. I became that by the way, with a career in Alcohol and Drug Counseling to fall back on. It is funny when we are teen-agers, it seems sometimes we do what others, especially parents want us to do in life. Kids should also be allowed to think on their own. Keith The other evening as I went for a run by the river here in New Mexico, I saw two kids about twelve years old throwing rocks at the ducks. When they saw me coming they immediately straightened up in a stiff posture and said ”Hi Sir, have a good run.” They assumed I would be like the typical adult and jump on them. I have always said I would never be the adult like the ones when I was growing up, and I am not.
Meanwhile I remember being about their age and I was out shooting my B.B. gun when I saw a robin about 50 ft away. I took a pot shot and nailed it right in the stomach. It was flopping around feathers flying, I didn’t kill it, it wasn’t a clean shot. I was shocked I had not thought ahead enough to think about how I would feel if I actually hit it. Anyway I felt horrible. It was suffering so my friend shot it again to put it out of his misery. I was devastated by the whole incident. Now back to the kids I came across when running. I told them this story and indeed the youngsters said they had not actually thought about how they would feel if they hit the duck. So I told them if they wanted to keep throwing rocks at the ducks, go ahead, but be prepared to feel bad if you hit it. I assumed they stopped who knows. Keith |
