A penny on the sidewalk, you probably have never thought much about it other than perhaps checking to see if it is heads up and then picking it up. Have you ever wondered who dropped it? Did they mean to? Did it fall out of their pocket while they were digging through them looking for something else of more importance? Was this penny in this individuals way and they just threw it out on the ground. Was it in a child’s hand who thought it was cool to have because their father had just given it to them and now they’re sad because he or she lost it. How many places and people do you think this penny has come in contact with? It could have passed through every state, maybe even other countries and probably been held in millions of different hands. Take a second to think about what if a penny could talk. Think of what you could learn. It could have been with Albert Einstein when he was working on the theory of relativity, it could have been in Martin Luther King’s pocket when he made his famous, “I Have a Dream,” speech, it could have been in your mother’s purse the day you were born, it could have been laying on the ocean floor and washed to the shore at some point. I guarantee this penny on the sidewalk has seen more than any human has seen. Perhaps this penny has been in prison, rehab, the White House, a submarine, a child’s mouth, a child’s stomach, in a dead person’s pocket, in an ice cream truck, in a vending machine. The list is endless. So the next time you see a penny think about what its history may be. It’s amazing if you really think about it. It’s never just a penny on the sidewalk. Think about it. Have a good Wednesday.---Keith
